ABSTRACT

Liver, a vital organ performs different functions (protein manufacturing, metabolism, clearance of toxins and drugs). Anti-tuberculosis drugs are hepatotoxic, causing acute liver failure. Currently all medicines for its protection are not effective. Discovering liver tonic medicines are highly needed. Antioxidants supplemental use is important for protection of liver. In this study hepatoprotective effect of two antioxidants (Zinc Sulfate- 7mg /kg/day and Silymarin- 200mg /kg/day) was evaluated and compared against two 1st line Anti TB (Isoniazid- 50mg/kg/day and Rifampicin- 100 mg/kg/day). Twenty eight rats were divided equally in G1, G2, G3 and G4. Liver injury was induced in G2, G3 and G4. Hepatoprotective function of Silymarin and Zinc sulfate was evaluated in G3 and G4 by histopathological changes. Significant changes were observed in parameters (lobular lymphocytic infiltrate, neutrophils, sinusoidal distension, hepatocytes enlargement, steatosis inflammed portal area, congestion, prominent kuppfer cells, mast cells, portal lymphocytic infiltrate, portal and lobular plasma cellular infiltrate) (p-value 0.05) among groups. This study proves hepatoprotective effect of Zinc sulfate, Silymarin supplementation
